DJ／コレクターのMr Thingから「次にブラジルでディグるとき、これを探してくれ」と頼まれるような一枚…そんなレコードが軽いはずがない。しかもMadlibが伝説的アルバム『Madvillain』の収録曲「Curls」でサンプリングしているとなれば、コレクター魂に火がつくのも当然だ。

『Airport Love Theme』は、1970年にCopacabanaレーベルからリリースされたワウジール・カルモンのアルバム『Waldir Calmon E Seus Multisons』からの一曲。眼鏡をかけた中年男性がジャケットに写る、何の変哲もないように見えるこのレコードが、『Madvillain』の一部を構成するとは、誰が想像しただろうか。しかし、見た目で判断してはいけないというのはよくある話。曲名が示す通り『Airport Love Theme』はラウンジ・ミュージックど真ん中の快楽的サウンド。まるで存在しなかった理想郷のサウンドトラックのように、滑らかで心地よいグルーヴに包まれながら、耳に残るメロディが密かに忍び寄る。

B面には、同アルバムからのもう一つの珠玉『Afro Som』を収録。こちらはよりブラジル色の強いファンク・ブレイク寄りの一曲で、1970年にジャン＝ジャック・ペリーが放った『E.V.A.』に通じる、奇妙でクセになるメロディとビートを持つ。Moogの代わりにカルモンらしいオーケストラ的アプローチが光る、シネマティックでエキゾチックな一曲。

ワウジール・カルモンは1950年代から活動を始め、1982年に亡くなるまで現役を貫いたアーティスト。14歳で最初のバンドを結成し、ナイトクラブの演奏やジングル制作からキャリアをスタート。50年代にはテレビ業界に進出し、並行して音楽制作にも力を注ぎ、トム・ジョビン、ジョアン・ジルベルト、ドリス・モンテイロといった偉大な音楽家たちと同じシーンで活躍していた。

You know it’s going to be a heavyweight record when DJ and vinyl head Mr Thing asks you to hunt it down on your next digging trip to Brazil. Add to that the fact that it was sampled by Madlib on “Curls” from the Madvillain album—and it’s clear this one has deep crate-digging pedigree.

“Airport Love Theme” is taken from Waldir Calmon E Seus Multisons, released in 1970 on Copacabana. At first glance, the album cover—featuring a middle-aged man in glasses—doesn’t scream “sample gold,” but as with many things in life, appearances deceive. The track dives fully into lush lounge territory, with a buttery, feel-good groove that sounds like a soundtrack to a utopia that never existed. Beneath that silky surface lies an irresistible earworm.

On the flip side is “Afro Som,” also from the same album. This one ventures into funkier, more Brazilian-rooted territory with a quirky 60s breakbeat vibe. The melody and rhythm bring to mind Jean Jacques Perrey’s “E.V.A.” (also from 1970), but where Perrey used Moog synths, Calmon opts for orchestrated instrumentation. The result is cinematic, exotic, and packed with break-ready magic.

Waldir Calmon’s career spanned from the 1950s through to his death in 1982. He formed his first ensemble at 14, cutting his teeth in nightclubs and composing jingles before moving into a long-running career in television during the early 50s. He also found success in the recording world, moving in the same circles as legends like Tom Jobim, João Gilberto, and Doris Monteiro.
