控えめな姿勢で知られるSurprise Chefだが、そのサウンドには間違いなく特別な何かが宿っている。彼ら全員が同じ家に暮らし、深い絆を築いていること、自らレーベルを運営する中で育まれたDIY精神、そしてメルボルンのホームスタジオに漂う空気——それらが重なり合い、唯一無二で魅惑的な音楽を生み出している。

本作『Daylight Savings』は、デビュー作『All News Is Good News』に続くセカンド・アルバム。前作は世界中で高い評価を受け、バンドを一気に国際舞台へと押し上げた。その約1年後、2019年春に録音された本作は、オーストラリアで夏時間が始まる週末に制作された。スタジオの外壁に這うジャスミンの香りが漂う中で録音され、これから訪れる暖かな季節と長い昼の時間に満ちた楽観的なムードが、作品全体に注ぎ込まれている。

録音はメルボルンの自宅スタジオで行われ、エンジニアのヘンリー・ジェンキンスによって前作よりもスケールの大きなサウンドが実現された。アナログ機材と創造的な録音技法を駆使し、1960年代後半のCapitol Recordsを彷彿とさせる広がりのある音像を作り出している。

楽曲はバンド全員による共同制作で、Surprise Chefの中核をなすリズム・セクションが軸となっている。前作の延長線上にありつつも、今作ではソウル色よりも70年代ジャズ・ファンクの要素が色濃く、リズム・セクションに一層フォーカスされた内容に仕上がっている。デヴィッド・アクセルロッドやアラン・ゴラゲールのシネマティックな作品に通じるドラマ性、El Michels Affair、そして同郷メルボルンのKarate BoogalooやThe Putbacksからの影響を感じさせながらも、紛れもなくSurprise Chefらしさに満ちた音世界が広がる。

その洗練されたサウンドには、「いずれ他のプロデューサーたちがサンプリングを始めるだろう」と思わせる不思議な説得力がある。

Surprise Chef may not say it themselves, but there’s clearly something special going on behind their doors. Maybe it’s the close-knit dynamic of sharing a house, the strong DIY ethos of running their own label, or the magic in the Melbourne air around their home studio—whatever the cause, it’s resulted in a uniquely captivating sound.

Daylight Savings is the follow-up to their acclaimed debut, All News Is Good News, which helped the group earn international recognition. Recorded almost exactly one year later in Spring 2019, the album was captured the same weekend daylight savings began in Australia. The scent of jasmine blooming on the back wall of the house filled the studio, setting the tone for a record infused with the brightness and optimism of longer days and warmer weather.

Tracked in their own home studio, the production marks a notable step forward from their debut. Engineer Henry Jenkins shaped an expansive soundscape using imaginative analogue techniques, creating a sonic depth reminiscent of late-60s Capitol Records sessions.

Written collaboratively by the full band, Daylight Savings places a stronger focus on the rhythm section and leans more toward 1970s jazz-funk than the soul-rooted textures of their first album. There’s a cinematic flair reminiscent of David Axelrod or Alain Goraguer’s vintage arrangements, alongside influences from El Michels Affair and local Melbourne groups like Karate Boogaloo and The Putbacks. Still, the result is unmistakably Surprise Chef.

There’s something rare here: a modern band that feels timeless—so much so that it’s only a matter of time before others begin sampling their work.
