セウ・ジョルジは、映画『シティ・オブ・ゴッド』での鮮烈な演技（ノックアウト・ネッド役）で一躍脚光を浴び、その後、ウェス・アンダーソン監督の2004年作『ライフ・アクアティック』では主演のひとりとして登場。劇中ではポルトガル語で歌うデヴィッド・ボウイのカバーが大きな話題を呼び、サウンドトラックのハイライトにもなった。『Carolina』は、そんな彼の世界的なブレイクを決定づけ、グラミー賞ノミネートに至る音楽キャリアの礎となった。

プロデュースは、Beastie BoysやPlanet Hempで知られるマリオ・カルダートが担当。サンバとファンクを鮮やかに融合させた、ギター、ベース、ドラム、パーカッション、ホーンによる生演奏が魅力のコンテンポラリーな名盤である。

This single LP collectors’ edition highlights the very best tracks from Carolina, the groundbreaking 2002 debut album by Brazilian virtuoso Seu Jorge. Originally released under the title Samba Esporte Fino, the album earned widespread international acclaim and played a key role in launching Seu Jorge to global stardom.

Seu first rose to prominence through his gripping role as Knockout Ned in the iconic film City of God. He soon captured worldwide attention again in Wes Anderson’s The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou (2004), where he starred and famously performed Portuguese-language covers of David Bowie songs—standout moments on the film’s soundtrack. Carolina cemented his status as a major musical force and paved the way to a Grammy nomination and an enduring career.

Co-produced by Mario Caldato—best known for his work with Beastie Boys and Planet Hemp—the album fuses samba and funk in vibrant, contemporary form, delivered with guitar, bass, drums, percussion, and bold horn sections.

It opens with the beloved title track “Carolina,” an infectious, feel-good anthem that builds to a joyous sing-along finale. Other standouts include the 80s-tinged Brazilian funk groove of “Mangueira,” reminiscent of Tim Maia, and the jazzy samba flair of “Tu Queria,” a track guaranteed to set any dancefloor alight.
