サルサ、ソウル、ファンク、カリプソ、アフロ・キューバン・リズムを飲み込んだ、まさにマイアミの熱気とキューバの炎が交差する万華鏡のようなアルバム。サイドAには、心を掴むラテン・チューンがずらり。中でも中毒性抜群のオープニング曲『La Señorita Lola』や、力強いホーンとユニークなオルガングルーヴが炸裂する『Lo Sabia』は白眉の出来だ。『Venimos Acabando』の艶やかなムードや、『El Alacran』の跳ねるようなオルガン・スタブもダンスフロアを確実に盛り上げてくれる。

サイドBでは、マイアミ・ファンクの要素が一気に前面に出る。DJにも人気の『Cookie Crumbs』は、灼熱のベースラインにトリップ感満載のヴォイス・サンプル、ブレイクビーツが炸裂する強烈な一曲。そして忘れがたい異色のファンク・インスト『Soul Freedom』では、ゲイリー・ゴットフリードによるバスクラリネットの妙技が光る。

さらに、ボビー・ヘブの名曲『Sunny』を、女性ヴォーカルと色香漂うオルガンでキューバン・ファンクへと再構築。原曲への愛情と個性が共存する、官能的な名カヴァーに仕上がっている。

Latin funk at its finest. Ray Fernandez, a pivotal figure in Miami’s Cuban music scene, assembled his ‘court’ for this stunning Afro-Cuban funk masterpiece. A largely family-led project, the album features his wife, two sons, and a stellar lineup of musicians—including saxophonist Rickey Washington, father of contemporary jazz legend Kamasi Washington. Originally released in 1973 on Manuel J. Mato’s iconic Sound Triangle Records, Ray & His Court delivers pure Miami heat powered by Cuban fire—merging salsa, soul, funk, calypso, and Afro-Cuban rhythms.

A kaleidoscopic blend of styles, the album flows effortlessly in true Ray Fernandez fashion. Side A showcases classic Latin grooves, including the addictive opener “La Señorita Lola” and the horn-heavy, organ-driven pulse of “Lo Sabia.” Tracks like the tantalising “Venimos Acabando” and the bouncing keys of “El Alacran” serve up irresistible dancefloor energy.

Side B kicks into higher gear, injecting some serious Miami funk. The DJ favourite “Cookie Crumbs” rides a blazing bassline, tripped-out voice samples, and breakbeat drums. Then there’s “Soul Freedom”—a standout instrumental with unforgettable bass clarinet lines from Gary Gottfried. And let’s not forget the Cuban funk reimagining of Bobby Hebb’s “Sunny,” where sultry female vocals and organ flourishes breathe new life into a timeless classic (is there any bad version of this tune?).
