Project Gemini - Colours & Light (MRBLP301)

2022年のデビュー作『The Children Of Scorpio』で多くのリスナーを惹きつけたProject Gemini（ポール・オズボーン）の世界。続く本作『Colours & Light』は、その心を深く揺さぶる、より奥深い作品となっている。フォークロック、サイケデリックなサウンドトラック、そしてシネマティックで幻想的なファンクが交錯する、荘厳で美しいアルバムだ。

前作の好評を受けて、作曲やプロダクションにはより一層の自信と余裕が感じられる。ポール本人も「よりレイヤーが多く、多様性に富んだアルバム。聴いていたレコードや、幸運にも共演できたミュージシャンたちの影響が音に表れている」と語る通り、内省的でありながらも開かれたグローバルな感覚が全編を貫いている。

アルバムのテーマは、ポールが書き始めた歌詞から自然に形づくられていった。眠れぬ夜に創作意欲がかき立てられ、人間関係や感情、夜遊びとその余韻といった等身大のテーマが、文化やシーンを越境するサウンドスケープのプリズムを通して描かれる。アシッド・フォーク、サイケ・ファンク、フランス風の感性、さらにはアナトリアや東洋からの影響までもが、ひとつの万華鏡のように織りなされている。

本作は、ポールの敬愛するアーティストたちとのコラボレーションでも彩られている。タイトル曲「Colours & Light」では、Pentangleの1973年ライブTV音源「Wedding Dress」へのオマージュを込め、Wolf PeopleやLarge Plantsで活躍するギタリスト、ジャック・シャープがフォーク・ロックの魅力を響かせる。

さらに、『Extra Nuit』と『Entre chien et loup』の2曲では、仏バンドGloriaのヴォーカル、ウェンディ・マルティネスがフランス語での艶やかな歌声を披露。ラウランス・ヴァネイ、カルシウム、レオニー、セルジュ・ゲンスブールといった60～70年代のフレンチ・サイケポップへの愛情が感じられる仕上がりだ。ギターは同じくGloriaのアレクシ・モレル（Kid Victrola）が担当し、陶酔感ある旋律を添えている。

その他にも、Raz、Markey Funk、ドラマーのTony Coote、パーカッショニストのPaul Elliottといった豪華ゲストが参加。常連でありアンダーグラウンド・シーンのアイコン的存在、Barrie Cadogan（Little Barrie）とThe Cromagnon BandのBert Pageは、それぞれカントリー調のファズギターとMoogによる狂気的なサウンドで『Lost In The Woods (Bacchanal)』に参加している。

終盤の楽曲『Twilight』では、ポールの娘オリヴィア・オズボーンがキーボード・イントロを提供し、The Soundcarriersのドリアン・コンウェイが、夜明けの幻影を思わせるサイケデリックなフルートを重ねる。なおミキシングは同バンドのポール・イシャーウッドが再び担当。

光と影が絶妙なバランスで織りなされる今作は、ポール・オズボーンの鮮やかで生々しいストーリーテリングの才能が存分に発揮された一枚である。

If 2022’s The Children Of Scorpio was the debut that drew listeners into the world of Project Gemini—aka Paul Osborne—then Colours & Light is the album that will etch that world deep into their hearts. Majestic and immersive, it fuses folk rock, psychedelic soundtracks, and hazy cinematic funk into one luminous whole.

Buoyed by the acclaim of his debut, Osborne approaches his sophomore album with a growing sense of confidence and ease. “It’s a more layered and diverse record,” he notes, “with a more outward-looking, global sound, shaped by the records I was listening to and the musicians I was lucky to collaborate with.” The result is a kaleidoscope of sound—relaxed yet assured, intricate yet inviting.

The album’s lyrical themes developed organically, often born from restless nights of insomnia, stirred by relationships, emotion, late nights out, quiet nights in, and the reverberations they leave on the soul. Universal themes, refracted through a diverse sonic prism: acid folk, psych-funk, Francophile textures, Anatolian echoes, and Eastern undertones swirl together in hypnotic harmony.

Colours & Light shines with collaborations. The title track, inspired by a 1973 TV performance of Pentangle’s “Wedding Dress,” features the masterful folk-rock guitar of Jack Sharp (Wolf People, Large Plants).

Elsewhere, two standout tracks—“Extra Nuit” and “Entre chien et loup”—feature the sultry French vocals of Gloria’s Wendy Martinez, channeling Osborne’s deep affection for classic French psych-pop artists like Laurance Vanay, Calcium, Léonie, and Serge Gainsbourg. Her voice weaves seamlessly into Osborne’s textured arrangements, with Gloria’s Alexis Morel (aka Kid Victrola) adding mesmerizing guitar lines.

The collaborative spirit runs deep, with contributions from Raz, Markey Funk, drummer Tony Coote, and percussionist Paul Elliott. Longtime collaborator and underground icon Barrie Cadogan (Little Barrie) returns, joined by Bert Page of The Cromagnon Band—bringing fuzz-drenched country guitar and Moog-fueled madness to “Lost In The Woods (Bacchanal).”

Adding a personal touch, Paul’s daughter Olivia Osborne provides the haunting keyboard intro to “Twilight,” while Dorian Conway of The Soundcarriers (with bandmate Paul Isherwood on mixing duties) overlays vivid, echo-laced flute to conjure a psychedelic sunrise.

Balancing light and shade, tension and tenderness, Colours & Light is a richly detailed journey of sound and storytelling—vivid, visceral, and deeply human.
