ナズ（Nas）のキャリアは、概ね安定したクオリティを保ちつつも、時折“低調期”を挟むものだった。ラップスキルは誰もが認める一方で、ビート選びに関しては「センスがない」と批判されることも（もちろん『Illmatic』は例外として）。

そんなナズがストリートのファンとの距離を再び縮めるきっかけとなったのが、2003年のシングル『Made You Look』だった。『I Am…』『Nastradamus』と迷走気味のアルバムが続いた後、『Stillmatic』である程度の復調を見せたものの、Jay-Zとのビーフでは分が悪かったという見方も根強かった。

だが『Made You Look』は、リリース直後からクラブとストリートで支持を集め、ファンとの再接続に成功。リリックはこれぞハードコア・ブラッギンの教科書といった内容で、フロー、パンチラインともにキレ味抜群。引用されることも多い名バースの数々がここにある。

そして何より特筆すべきは、そのビート。プロデュースを手がけたのは、フージーズを再生させた立役者としても知られるサラーム・レミ。サンプリング元は言わずと知れたIncredible Bongo Bandの『Apache』だが、その切り取り方が他とは一線を画す。シンプルながら即効性があり、20年経った今でも、止まったフロアを瞬時に沸かせ、硬い首を自然に揺らす力を持っている。

このオリジナル・バージョンが7インチとしてリリースされるのは今回が初。フル・アートワーク付きでの再発となる。

“Made You Look” was a turning point. After the uneven efforts of I Am… and Nastradamus, and despite some redemption on Stillmatic, many still saw him as having come off second-best in his high-profile beef with Jay-Z.

This single changed that narrative. A certified club and street anthem from the moment it dropped, “Made You Look” reconnected Nas with his core audience. Lyrically, it’s raw bravado delivered with finesse—packed with memorable bars that would themselves go on to be sampled by others.

But it’s the beat that makes this track immortal. Salaam Remi, known for reviving careers (including The Fugees’), crafted a loop from the oft-sampled Incredible Bongo Band’s “Apache”—a bold move made brilliant through restraint. Deceptively simple, it lands with unstoppable energy. Two decades later, it still transforms silence into motion, filling dancefloors and snapping heads to the beat.

This marks the first-ever 7” release of the original version—complete with full sleeve artwork.
