マルコス・ヴァーリを「ブラジル音楽のレジェンド」と呼ぶのは、単なる宣伝文句ではない。シンガー、作曲家、ミュージシャン、プロデューサーとして、彼は1960〜70年代の“黄金時代”から現代に至るまで、ブラジル音楽の音を形成してきた中心的存在である。兄のパウロ・セルジオ・ヴァーリとともに、自身の楽曲だけでなく、エルザ・ソアレス、アストラッド・ジルベルト、クラウジアなど数々の偉大なアーティストに提供した名曲も多い。

『Braziliance!』は、そんなマルコスのキャリア初期――リオのボサノヴァ・シーンが最も輝いていた頃――にフォーカスした作品である。ポルトガル語で『Os Grilos』として知られる名曲「Crickets Sing For Anamaria」のインストゥルメンタル版も収録され、後にヴォーカル入りバージョンとして再録音されることになる。録音当時、マルコスはまだ20代前半ながら、その洗練されたサウンド・プロダクションは年齢を超えた成熟度を示している。

1966年に録音され、ルイス・オリヴェイラとレイ・ギルバートのプロデュース、エミール・デオダートのアレンジにより完成したこのアルバムは、ワーナー・ブラザースからリリースされた。ジャケットでは清潔感あふれる若きマルコスが写っているが、当時のブラジルは暗い時代の入り口に差しかかっていた。やがてトロピカリア運動が台頭し、音楽的にも政治的にも大きな揺らぎが訪れる。

多くのボサノヴァ系アーティストが時代の波に飲まれていく中、マルコス・ヴァーリは文化や社会の変化に寄り添いながら、その音楽性を進化させ続けた。決して妥協することなく、常に時代と響き合うアートを追求したのである。

To call Marcos Valle a legend of Brazilian music is far more than just promotional hyperbole. As a singer, songwriter, musician, and producer, Marcos has played a key role in defining the sound of Brazilian music from the golden era of the 1960s and 70s through to the present day. Alongside his brother Paulo Sergio Valle, he’s responsible for a vast catalogue of classic compositions—both for himself and for icons like Elza Soares, Astrud Gilberto, and Claudia, among many others.

Braziliance! takes us back to the bright, early days of Marcos’ career, echoing the optimism and sophistication of Rio de Janeiro’s bossa nova scene. The album includes an instrumental version of “Crickets Sing For Anamaria” (or “Os Grilos” in Portuguese), which would later be re-recorded with vocals. Though only in his early twenties at the time, the album showcases an astonishingly refined level of production for such a young artist.

Recorded in 1966 and released on Warner Bros. Records, the album was produced by Louis Oliveira and Ray Gilbert, with arrangements by the gifted Eumir Deodato. The cover shows a clean-cut, wholesome image of Marcos, yet darker days were looming for Brazil. The Tropicalia movement was on the horizon—set to shake things up both musically and politically.

Unlike many of his bossa nova contemporaries, Marcos Valle remained not only relevant but essential. He embraced change, adapted to cultural and social shifts, and continued to evolve—never compromising the art at the core of his music.
