Main Source - Looking At The Front Door (MRB7187)

ヒップホップが苦手とされるもの――それは「繊細な感情表現」だと言われることが多い。そんな中で登場したのが、Large Professor率いるMain Sourceの名曲『Looking at the Front Door』。Wild Pitch Recordsからのファースト・シングルであり、金字塔アルバム『Breaking Atoms』の幕開けを飾る1曲だ。

Donald ByrdによるBlue Note名曲『Think Twice』をループの軸に据え、The Pazant Brothers & Beaufort Expressの『Chick A Boom』のキャッチーなコーラスを加えたプロダクションは、失恋の切なさを滲ませるロマンチックな傑作。1990年当時のヒップホップシーンにおいては異色の選曲とも言えるが、その誠実なサウンドと感情表現が多くのリスナーに刺さった、まさに名演である。

B面『Watch Roger Do His Thing』もまた異なる角度から光を放つ一曲。「拳じゃなく、頭で勝負する」兄貴の物語を、Funkadelicの『You’ll Like It Too』からのドラム（Eric B & Rakimの『I Know You Got Soul』でもおなじみ）と、JD Drumsticksによるスケートリンクに似合いそうなオルガン・ラインの上で語り上げる。メッセージは明快――「ドラッグに手を出すな、勉強しろ」――だが、それを説教臭くなく自然体で伝えるのがMain Sourceの魅力であり、Large Proの力量だ。

本作は初の公式UKリリースであり、A/B両面が揃って7インチ化されるのも今回が初となる。

Built around a loop from Donald Byrd’s Blue Note gem “Think Twice” and lifted by the earworm hook of “Chick A Boom” by The Pazant Brothers & Beaufort Express, the track tells a wistful story of a relationship on the rocks. It was a bold choice for a debut single in the 1990 hip-hop landscape—an introspective tale amid a sea of bangers—but it proved the perfect introduction to Main Source’s unique voice.

The B-side, “Watch Roger Do His Thing,” takes a different route—painting the portrait of a smart, driven brother who “doesn’t fight, his brain is his left and right.” Built on the rock-solid drums of Funkadelic’s “You’ll Like It Too” (famously flipped by Eric B & Rakim), and layered with an original rink-ready organ line from JD Drumsticks, the track delivers its anti-drug, pro-education message with charm and grace. It’s that light-yet-clear delivery that became Main Source’s hallmark.

This release marks the first official UK issue—and the first time both of these classics have been paired together on a 7”.
