Mr Bongoが誇りをもってリリースする、タスマニア出身／メルボルン拠点の音楽家、Finn Reesのデビュー・アルバム。『Dawn Is A Melody』は、色彩豊かな音のパレットを滑空するように展開される、スピリチュアルで奥行きのあるジャズ作品。どこか懐かしく、それでいてまったく新しい響きが、過去への敬意と現代的な感性を美しく融合させている。

30/70やAllysha Joyの鍵盤奏者として、またデュオClose Countersの一員としても知られるFinnが、本作ではグルーヴ中心のジャズから意識的に距離を置き、ピアノとアレンジを中心に据えたアプローチへと移行。メルボルンの実力派ミュージシャンたちとの共演を通じて、余白の美しさ、新しい感情、別の音世界を探求している。

本人の言葉を借りれば、「この作品では、メロディや構成が最大限に輝けるような、色彩豊かで美しい世界を作りたかった。変化の激しいこの世界の中で、美しさと安心感を探し続ける——それがこの音楽の原動力なんだ。タスマニアの自然とともに育った経験も、このアルバムの感情の核になっている。」

アルバムは物語のような構成を持ち、幕開けは「Looking Up」と「Lagoon」による希望の光に満ちた序章から。前者はハープとストリングスが織りなす浮遊感あふれるポジティブな楽曲で、後者は70年代製のYamahaグランドピアノを中心に、スピリチュアルなエネルギーが溢れる旅路を描く。その後、「It’s Behind Me Now」のシネマティックなソウル、「Expansion」のブラジル的グルーヴを経て、「Crossing」で静かに新たな世界へと向かう。後半はより内面的で繊細な表情を見せ、「Ablaze」「Between Spaces」「As It Passes」でピアノとストリングスだけが残り、静かに幕を閉じる。

メルボルン・コリングウッドのRolling Stockにて録音。録音／ミックスはHenry Jenkinsが担当し、ヴィンテージ・マイクによるミニマルなセッティングで温かみのあるライブ感を引き出している。リズム隊はLucky PereiraとBlakely McLean Davies、さらにCheryl Durongpitikul（テナーサックス）、Siwei Wong（ハープ）、Audrey Powne（トランペット）、Allysha Joy（ヴォーカル）ら、厳選されたメルボルンの才能が集結。

Alice Coltrane、Herbie Hancock、Arthur Verocaiといった過去の偉人たちに敬意を払いながらも、完全に“今”を生きる音。どの時代に録られたのか一瞬わからなくなるような、不思議な時間軸の中で展開される温かくも鮮やかなサウンドスケープ。

Mr Bongo proudly presents Dawn Is A Melody, the debut album by Tasmania-born, Melbourne-based artist Finn Rees. A sweeping, spiritual jazz record that feels vintage yet immediate, this is a work rooted in reverence for the past while confidently shaping its own sound—textured, emotive, and unmistakably present.

Known as the keys player for 30/70 and Allysha Joy, as well as one half of electronic duo Close Counters, Finn steps into the spotlight here, intentionally moving away from groove-heavy jazz. Instead, Dawn Is A Melody places piano and arrangement at the center, creating space for emotion, stillness, and sonic exploration—with a cast of Melbourne’s finest musicians alongside.

In Finn’s words: “My intention was to build a world of sound, a microcosm of colour. It’s about beauty, hope, and growing through change. It reflects my relationship with Tasmania’s unique natural landscapes, where I grew up.”

The album unfolds like a journey: opening with the shimmering positivity of “Looking Up” and “Lagoon,” the latter played on a ‘70s Yamaha grand. It expands through cinematic and soulful moods (“It’s Behind Me Now”), Brazilian flourishes (“Expansion”), and transitions with the divine “Crossing.” The final act turns inward, as “Ablaze,” “Between Spaces,” and “As It Passes” quietly dissolve into piano and strings.

Recorded at Rolling Stock in Melbourne with Henry Jenkins (known for his minimal, warm, live-oriented mic setups), the album features a stellar rhythm section of Lucky Pereira and Blakely McLean Davies, with contributions from Cheryl Durongpitikul (tenor sax), Siwei Wong (harp), Audrey Powne (trumpet), Allysha Joy (vocals), and more.

Drawing a line from Alice Coltrane through Herbie Hancock to Arthur Verocai, Dawn Is A Melody is timeless—impossible to date, impossible to pin down. Like viewing the present through a vintage lens, it’s warm, rich, and unmistakably alive.
