伝説的なヒップホップの多くは、誤解から始まる――Cypress Hillの『Insane in the Brain』もそのひとつだ。今ではパーティ・アンセムとして定番中の定番、彼ら最大のヒット曲の一つとなったこの曲、実はディス・トラックだということは、100回聴いても気づかないかもしれない。

事の発端は1992年、Chubb Rockが自身の曲『Yabba Dabba Doo』でCypress Hillのリリックを引用したことに、グループが不快感を示したことから始まる。B-Realのバースでは直接的な攻撃は控えられているが、サブリミナルなレベルで皮肉を込めたディスが含まれており、Sen Dogに至ってはChubbの体型をネタにしたジョークを連発している。

この“隠れビーフ”の存在は、1993年当時シングルが全米ラップチャート1位を獲得し、世界的にポップヒットとなるほどの成功を収めた影にすっかり隠れてしまっている。この頃には、DJ Muggsによる独自のプロダクション・スタイルが完成の域に達しており、House of PainやFunkdoobiestといった他アーティストにもその手腕を提供していた。

本作では、Sly and the Family StoneやThe Youngbloodsのサンプルを用い、George Semperによる『Get Out of My Life, Woman』のインストゥルメンタル・カバーからビートを引用。それらを錬金術のように融合し、ブーツを踏み鳴らすような圧巻のビートに仕上げた。ヒップホップの枠を超えてフェスの定番曲にまで昇華し、最終的には『ザ・シンプソンズ』でネッド・フランダースが「“Insane in the old membrane,” Homer」と口ずさむほど文化に浸透した。

なお、本作の公式7インチはフィリピンでのみリリースされ、現在では数万円単位で取引されるレア盤。本リイシューは、そんなヒップホップ・クラシックをついに手に取りやすい形で蘇らせる。

So much legendary hip-hop begins with a misunderstanding—and Cypress Hill’s “Insane in the Brain” is no exception. Though it’s now a fixture of party playlists and one of the group’s biggest hits, it actually started as a diss track.

The spark? Chubb Rock had flipped some Cypress Hill lyrics on his 1992 track “Yabba Dabba Doo,” and the group didn’t take it lightly. B-Real’s verse is subtle, almost subliminal in its takedown, but Sen Dog’s contribution is more direct—filled with fat jokes aimed at Chubb.

It’s a little-known feud, buried beneath the towering success of the single, which topped the US rap charts in 1993 and became a crossover pop hit globally. By then, producer DJ Muggs had crafted a signature sound that extended beyond the group, producing hits for acts like House of Pain and Funkdoobiest.

“Insane in the Brain” blends samples from Sly and the Family Stone and The Youngbloods, anchored by a beat lifted from George Semper’s instrumental cover of “Get Out of My Life, Woman.” These elements are transformed into a stomping, brain-bouncing anthem that transcended hip-hop to become a festival staple—one that eventually echoed through pop culture when Ned Flanders uttered, “this may sound just a teensy bit insane in the old membrane, Homer,” on The Simpsons.

Until now, the only official 7” pressing of this classic came out in the Philippines, often fetching hundreds of pounds on the collector market. This reissue finally brings it back in a crate-digger-friendly format.
