1960〜80年代のブラジル音楽は、近年世界中で再評価が進み、Gal Costa、Gilberto Gil、Arthur Verocai、Joyceといったアーティストたちは、グローバル・サウンドに情熱を注ぐリスナーにとって定番の存在となった。しかし、過去のブラジル音楽を愛するディープなファンにとっても、現代のブラジル新世代アーティストを発掘するのは決して容易ではない。そんな中で、今リオ・デ・ジャネイロを中心に新しい世代のミュージシャンたちが国境を越えて注目され始めている。

『Hidden Waters: Strange and Sublime Sounds of Rio de Janeiro』は、現代リオの音楽シーンに焦点を当てたコンピレーション。選曲は、ブラジル音楽専門プラットフォームBrazilian Waxの創設者Joe Osborneと、ラテンアメリカ音楽・文化を発信するSounds and ColoursのRuss Slaterが担当。あえてブラジル全体を網羅するのではなく、“リオ・シーン”にフォーカスし、同地の再興を象徴する20組以上の革新的なアーティストを厳選している。

収録曲は、アヴァンギャルドからボサノヴァ、サンバ、カンドンブレ、ローファイ・ロック、ジャズ、ファンクまで、多彩なジャンルが交錯する。収録アーティストには、リオの重鎮Negro Leo & Ava Rocha、ジャズの新星Antônio Neves、批評家絶賛のアヴァン・ポップ旗手Thiago Nassif、話題のAna Frango ElétricoやLetrux、ローファイ・サイケのLê Almeida、そしてラテングラミーを受賞したBala Desejoなど、いずれも現代ブラジル音楽を語るうえで欠かせない顔ぶれが並ぶ。

本作に収められた音楽は、紛れもなく“現代のブラジル”。サンバやボサノヴァ、ファンク、ジャズの伝統を受け継ぎながら、サニ―・サイケデリアから黄昏のシンセポップ、実験的なエレクトロニクスまでが絶妙にブレンドされている。1960〜70年代のTropicália運動を想起させる実験精神や、当時の軍事政権と、近年のボルソナロ政権下での表現規制といった政治的文脈の重なりも見逃せない。

アートワークはリオの気鋭デザイナーCaio Paivaが担当。さらに音楽評論家・教授Bernardo OliveiraとジャーナリストLeonardo Lichoteによるエッセイ、そしてアーティスト自身による楽曲解説も収録された、資料性にも富んだ1枚。

Brazilian music from the 1960s, ’70s, and ’80s has seen a massive resurgence in recent years. Artists like Gal Costa, Gilberto Gil, Arthur Verocai, and Joyce have become beloved icons for an international audience obsessed with global sounds. Yet, even for dedicated Brazilian music collectors, discovering new, contemporary voices from Brazil can be difficult. That’s where Hidden Waters: Strange and Sublime Sounds of Rio de Janeiro comes in—a vital snapshot of a creative groundswell unfolding in real time.

Compiled by Joe Osborne (of Brazilian Wax) and Russ Slater (editor-at-large at Sounds and Colours), Hidden Waters zeroes in on the ‘Rio scene’ rather than attempting the impossible task of representing Brazil as a whole. Featuring over 20 cutting-edge artists, this compilation paints a vivid picture of modern Rio’s genre-blurring music landscape—from avant-garde to bossa nova, samba, Candomblé, lo-fi rock, jazz, and funk.

Included are legendary figures like Negro Leo & Ava Rocha, rising jazz star Antônio Neves, avant-pop visionary Thiago Nassif, breakthrough artists Ana Frango Elétrico and Letrux, lo-fi psych auteur Lê Almeida, and Latin Grammy-winners Bala Desejo—all redefining what Brazilian music can be today.

This is unmistakably Brazilian music—rich with samba, bossa, funk, and jazz roots—but it’s the mix of sunny psychedelia, moody synth-pop, and experimental textures that makes it feel so contemporary. Echoes of the Tropicália movement are unmistakable—not only in the music’s fearless experimentation but also in its political backdrop. Just as Tropicália emerged under Brazil’s military dictatorship in the ’60s, these artists have been creating under the shadow of Bolsonaro’s censorial regime.

The compilation comes with striking artwork by renowned Rio designer Caio Paiva, essays from critic Bernardo Oliveira and journalist Leonardo Lichote, plus detailed track-by-track notes written by the artists themselves.
