長らく待ち望まれていた、Mr Bongoによる人気コンピレーションの再発盤が登場。2枚組LPで届けられる、ブルックリン経由の極上ブラジル音楽セレクション。

『Brazilian Beats Brooklyn』は、伝説的クラブBlack Betty（2009年閉店）でのDJパーティーで知られたSean MarquandとGreg Cazの二人によって選曲された作品。彼らのプレイスタイルは、ヴィンテージのサンバ、サンバ・ロック、トロピカリア、ブラジリアン・ファンクに特化したもので、イベント名と同じ『Brazilian Beats Brooklyn』の名のもと、ウィリアムズバーグで多くのファンを魅了してきた。

SeanはEmbassy Sound Productionsの一員としても知られ、ブラジルに渡ってBlack Rioの伝説的グループUniao Blackを再始動させるプロジェクトを手がけた。Gregは世界各地のブラジル系パーティーでDJを務め、Soho Radio NYCで『Warm Wave』という月一のラジオ番組も持つ人物だ。

収録曲には、Noriel Vilelaによる「16 Toneladas」をはじめ、Tim Maia、Erasmo Carlos、João Bosco、Toni Tornadoといった強力な面々の楽曲を収録。「16 Toneladas」はTennessee Ernie Fordの名曲「16 Tons」を、重厚なバリトン・ヴォーカルとソリッドなサンバグルーヴで大胆に再解釈した珠玉のカバー。

1960〜70年代のオリジナル・ブラジリアン音源を中心に、GregとSeanが長年フロアを盛り上げてきたお気に入りのトラックが詰まった、ダンスフロア直結のコンピレーション。ブラジル音楽の豊潤な魅力と、ニューヨークのクラブ・カルチャーが見事に融合した一枚。

A long-awaited repress of a beloved Mr Bongo compilation, Brazilian Beats Brooklyn returns on double vinyl, offering a vibrant collection of Brazil’s finest grooves—filtered through the energy of Brooklyn’s club scene.

Compiled by Sean Marquand and Greg Caz, the selection reflects the spirit of their legendary sets at Black Betty, a Williamsburg hotspot that sadly closed in 2009. Under the Brazilian Beats Brooklyn name, the duo delivered unforgettable nights filled with vintage samba, samba-rock, Tropicalia, and Brazilian funk.

Sean, known for his work as one half of Embassy Sound Productions, even took his crew to Brazil to help relaunch Black Rio pioneers Uniao Black. Greg has spun Brazilian records at top parties worldwide and hosts a monthly show called Warm Wave on Soho Radio NYC.

The album includes Noriel Vilela’s remarkable “16 Toneladas”—a stripped-down samba cover of Tennessee Ernie Ford’s “16 Tons,” elevated by deep baritone vocals—as well as scorching cuts from Tim Maia, Erasmo Carlos, João Bosco, and Toni Tornado.

Digging into original 60s and 70s Brazilian classics, the compilation showcases some of Sean and Greg’s all-time favourites—floor-fillers that have stood the test of time. A joyful collision of Brazil’s golden era and Brooklyn’s party legacy.
