これはただの名盤ではありません。まさに“傑作”と呼ぶにふさわしい作品。Leon Sylvers IIIによる楽曲、Jerry ButlerとKeg Johnsonによるプロデュースによって生み出された、黄金期ソウルの真髄がここにある。

The Sylversはロサンゼルス出身の音楽一家で、1970年代から80年代初頭にかけてチャートを賑わせた人気グループ。のちに「Boogie Fever」「Hot Line」「High School Dance」など、ディスコ・ポップ全開のヒットでも知られるようになるが、本作『The Sylvers II』（1973年）は、グループ初期の最高峰とも言えるソウル／ファンク作品。

アルバム冒頭を飾る「We Can Make It If We Try」は、ミッドテンポで高揚感たっぷりの絶品ソウル・ナンバー。その後もファンク、ブギー、ディープ・ソウルへと展開し、ラストにはビートルズの名曲「Yesterday」をアカペラでしっとりとカバー。構成の妙も見逃せない。

The Sylversはサンプリング・ソースの宝庫としても知られており、本作の楽曲はMadlib（MF DOOM）、Homeboy Sandman、50 Cent、Ghostface Killah、Black Milk、Roc Marciano、David Banner & 9th Wonderなど、錚々たるアーティストたちに“再構築”されてきた。

今回のMr Bongo再発盤は、オリジナルのアートワークを忠実に再現した公式リイシュー。Pride Inc.との正規ライセンスによる2006年版の復刻です。

The Sylvers II, released in 1973, is a stunning slice of golden-era soul, penned by Leon Sylvers III and produced by legends Jerry Butler and Keg Johnson. It’s the second album from Los Angeles’ famed Sylvers family—an early-career gem that stands as one of their strongest, long before their later disco-pop hits like “Boogie Fever,” “Hot Line,” and “High School Dance.”

Opening with the gorgeous, mid-tempo soul of “We Can Make It If We Try,” the album glides through funk, boogie, and deep soul textures before closing with a hazy, acapella rendition of The Beatles’ “Yesterday.” It’s a perfectly sequenced journey through the group’s rich vocal harmonies and heartfelt arrangements.

Beyond its musical brilliance, the album has become a sample goldmine for hip-hop producers. Tracks have been flipped by Madlib (for MF DOOM), Homeboy Sandman, 50 Cent, Ghostface Killah, Black Milk, Roc Marciano, David Banner & 9th Wonder, and many more.

This is the official Mr Bongo reissue, faithfully reproducing the original artwork. Licensed from Pride Inc., this 2006 edition brings an essential soul classic back into circulation.
