真の意味で「アルバム」と呼ぶにふさわしい、スピリチュアルでサイケデリックなブラジル音楽の傑作『Krishnanda』。Seu JorgeやKassin、Floating Points、Madlib、Quantic、Gilles Peterson、DJ Nutsといった名だたるアーティストたちにも称賛されてきた一枚で、オリジナル盤は現在数千ドルで取引されるコレクターズ・アイテムとなっている。

1919年リオ生まれのペドロ・ドス・サントスは、卓越したパーカッショニストであり、作曲家、さらには楽器の発明家としても知られる人物。電化竹ドラム「タンバ」や、口にくわえて鳴らすビリンバウ・ホイッスルなど、奇抜でユニークな楽器を考案した。彼が生み出したリズム「ソロンゴ」は、アルバム全体を通じて響き渡っており、彼の愛称にもなっている。深い精神性を持つ彼は、周囲から哲学者のような存在としても敬愛されていた。

バーデン・パウエル、エリス・レジーナ、マリア・ベターニア、エルザ・ソアレス、セバスチアン・タパジョス、ロベルト・ヒベイロ、ミルトン・ナシメント、クララ・ヌネス、さらにはポール・サイモンやアルトゥール・ヴェロカイといった錚々たる面々との共演歴を持つ。ヴェロカイの名盤と同様に、『Krishnanda』はペドロにとって初めてにして唯一のソロ・アルバムであり、彼自身の世界観を全面に打ち出した貴重な作品となっている。

1968年、CBS（ブラジル）よりリリースされた本作は、Tamba Trioのドラマーであるエルシオ・ミリートがプロデュースを担当し、指揮者ジョッパ・リンスがアレンジを手がけている。音楽的にはフォーク、サンバ、アフロ・ブラジリアン、サイケデリックなどが融合され、様々な音響効果が加えられた奥深い仕上がり。歌詞には道徳、認識、存在、エゴといった哲学的テーマが詰め込まれている。

当時のミュージシャンにも大きな影響を与えたにもかかわらず、この傑作はリリース後しばらくして忘れ去られてしまった。Mr Bongoが初めてこの作品を知ったのは2003年頃、友人Julio Duiから紹介されたのがきっかけだった。当時はブラジル・ファンクやボサノヴァの再評価期で、すぐにはピンと来なかったが、年を重ねるごとにその魅力が明らかとなり、今ではジャンルや国籍を超えて「史上最高のアルバムのひとつ」と評価されている。

今回のMr Bongo再発盤は、Julio Duiから借りたオリジナル盤をもとに、リオ・デ・ジャネイロのMagic MasterでRicardo Garciaが音源マスタリングを、Andrew Edwardsがジャケットアートの復刻を担当。オリジナルに限りなく忠実な仕様で届けられる一枚。

The official Mr Bongo reissue of Krishnanda presents a true album in every sense—a spiritual, psychedelic Brazilian masterpiece from beginning to end. Revered by the likes of Seu Jorge, Kassin, Floating Points, Madlib, Quantic, Gilles Peterson, and DJ Nuts, original pressings now sell for thousands of dollars.

Pedro dos Santos, born in Rio in 1919, was a percussion virtuoso, composer, and inventor of unusual instruments—including the electrified bamboo drum ‘Tamba’ and a whistle built into a berimbau. He was nicknamed “Pedro Sorongo” after the rhythm he created, which flows throughout Krishnanda. A deeply spiritual man, he was regarded by many as something of a philosopher.

Pedro worked alongside Brazilian legends like Baden Powell, Elis Regina, Maria Bethânia, Elza Soares, Sebastião Tapajós, Roberto Ribeiro, Milton Nascimento, Clara Nunes—and even Paul Simon and Arthur Verocai, appearing on Verocai’s legendary self-titled LP. In that same spirit, Krishnanda was his one and only solo album—a rare moment in the spotlight for an artist who had long supported others.

Originally released in 1968 on CBS (Brasil), the album was produced by Hélcio Milito of Tamba Trio and arranged by conductor Joppa Lins. Musically, it blends folk, samba, Afro-Brazilian rhythms, and psychedelia, layered with experimental effects and lyrical themes exploring morality, perception, existence, and ego.

Despite its brilliance, the record faded into obscurity after its release. Mr Bongo first came across it around 2003 through their friend Julio Dui. At the time, Brazilian funk and bossa were in vogue, so it didn’t make an immediate impact—but like the finest albums, it only got better with age. Today, Krishnanda is regarded as one of the greatest records ever made, regardless of genre or geography.

This reissue faithfully reproduces the original LP. Audio mastering is by Ricardo Garcia at Magic Master (Rio de Janeiro), with artwork restoration by Andrew Edwards, using a copy generously loaned by Julio Dui—thank you, sir.
