ロンドンの最もエキサイティングなバンドのひとつ、ニュー・レジェンシー・オーケストラのデビュー・アルバムが登場。18人編成のアフロ・キューバン・ビッグバンドは、1950年代のニューヨークの音楽的坩堝にインスパイアされつつ、ロンドン屈指のラテン＆ジャズ・ミュージシャンによる圧倒的なパワーを併せ持つ。その輝かしい時代の名曲を現代の息吹で再解釈し、エネルギーに満ちた作品へと昇華している。

このプロジェクトを立ち上げたのは、Total Refreshment CentreやChurch of Soundを手がけてきたアーティスティック・ディレクター、レックス・ブロンディン。ジャズへの深い愛情から、彼は1940年代中盤のNYで生まれたアフロ・キューバン・ジャズに辿り着く。マリオ・バウザをはじめとするキューバの巨匠たちと、ディジー・ガレスピーやチャーリー・パーカーといったジャズの偉人たちがぶつかり合い、生まれた爆発的なサウンド。当時、それは自由と表現の象徴であり、ニューヨーク・パラディウムのようなダンスフロアで育まれていった。

しかし、こうしたダンス志向のクラシックな録音は、現代のクラブシーンで耳にすることは少ない。レックスは、それらを今の時代のダイナミズムで再構築しようと夢見ていた。そんな中、偶然に新たなフェスティバル出演の機会が舞い込み、彼はすぐに行動を開始。18人編成のビッグバンドが、その夢を現実にした。

レックスは、Como Noのアンディ・ウッドとタッグを組み、ロンドンの精鋭ミュージシャンたちを集結。音楽監督にはエリアーネ・コレアを迎え、流動的かつ強力なバンドが結成された。

本作は、タイムレスなアフロ・キューバン・ジャズの名曲をNRO流に再構築した全12曲を収録。『Pregon』の力強いホーン・リフや、『Mambo Rama』の中毒性あるグルーヴ、『Papa Boco』『Labasta Llego』といった熱量あふれるヴォーカル曲も含まれる。ティト・プエンテ、チコ・オファリル、レネ・エルナンデス、ラファエル・ラバスタらの楽曲に、現代ロンドンの息吹を注ぎ込んだ意欲作だ。

「“Mambo Rama”や“Scarlet Mambo”のような曲には、ドラムやベースシンセが加わりジム帰りのように筋肉質になってるし、“Sahib & Tito”ではティトの“Mambo Buda”とサヒブ・シハブの“Nus”を融合させてる。オリジナルへのリスペクトを大切にしながら、ロンドンならではのエッセンスも注入したかったんだ。」

Announcing the debut album from one of London’s most electrifying acts: New Regency Orchestra. This 18-piece Afro-Cuban big band draws inspiration from 1950s New York’s musical melting pot, infused with the raw power of London’s top Latin and jazz talent. Their album reimagines the golden era’s finest compositions with modern fire and flair.

The vision comes from artistic director Lex Blondin, founder of Total Refreshment Centre and Church of Sound. A long-time jazz devotee, Lex discovered the explosive Afro-Cuban sounds of mid-1940s NYC through the work of Mario Bauzá. That moment in music saw icons like Dizzy Gillespie and Charlie Parker fuse with Cuban giants such as Machito and Chano Pozo, creating vibrant, dance-driven sounds that thrived in clubs like the New York Palladium—a symbol of freedom and expression.

While those early recordings were built for the dancefloor, they’re rarely heard in today’s club settings. Lex dreamed of reintroducing them with modern energy. A fortuitous festival opportunity emerged, and with it, the birth of an 18-piece band breathing new life into these legendary tracks.

Lex partnered with Como No’s Andy Wood to assemble a stellar lineup, appointing Eliane Correa as musical director and bandleader. The result is a fluid and powerful collective of musicians at the top of their game.

The album features 12 tracks—10 instrumentals and 2 vocal scorchers—hand-picked Afro-Cuban jazz classics reimagined with NRO’s distinctive force. From the anthemic horn blasts of “Pregon” and the infectious bounce of “Mambo Rama,” to vocal tracks like “Papa Boco” and “Labasta Llego,” this is a bold tribute to artists such as Tito Puente, Chico O’Farrill, René Hernandez, and Rafael Labasta, given fresh life through the sounds of London.

“Tracks like Tito Puente’s ‘Mambo Rama’ and ‘Scarlet Mambo’ feel like they’ve hit the gym—extra drums and synth bass pump them up—while ‘Sahib & Tito’ blends Tito’s ‘Mambo Buda’ with Sahib Shihab’s ‘Nus’. We wanted to honour the innovators and add our own spark from London’s jazz and Latin communities.”
