Main Source - Fakin’ The Funk (MRB7190)

1992年に映画『White Men Can’t Jump（ホワイト・メン・キャント・ジャンプ）』が公開された際、ほぼ同時にその劇中音楽を収録したEP『White Men Can’t Rap』がリリースされた。このちょっとひねりの効いたタイトルのEPには、Gang Starrの『Now You’re Mine』やMain Sourceの『Fakin’ the Funk』といった限定トラックが収録されていた。

その中で唯一シングルとしてリリースされたのが、Main Sourceによる『Fakin’ the Funk』。同年、Wild Pitch Recordsからリミックス・バージョンで発表され、EPの中でも群を抜く存在感を放っていたのは当然と言えるだろう。

イントロでは、Main Ingredientの名曲『Magic Shoes』の特徴的なハーモニーが鳴り響き、そのままGrady Tateのサンプリング定番『Be Black Baby』（1969年）から抜き取ったクリスプなビートへと展開。さらにKool & The Gangの要素も加わり、まるでMain Sourceの金字塔『Breaking Atoms』に自然と溶け込むような仕上がりとなっている。

だが実際には、この曲はグループにとってのラスト・ショット。K-Cut、Sir Scratch、そしてLarge Professorが三人揃って制作した最後の作品でもあり、ラージ・プロフェッサーはここで渾身のマイク・パフォーマンスを披露。長年の盟友Neek the Exoticとの共演で、“フェイクな連中”への怒りをストレートにぶつけている。

本作が公式に7インチ化されるのは今回が初。今なお色褪せることのない名曲であり、リミックス版こそが決定版とも言えるバージョンだ。

When White Men Can’t Jump hit theaters in 1992, an accompanying EP dropped around the same time. Titled with a wink as White Men Can’t Rap, the six-track release included a few exclusives—most notably Gang Starr’s “Now You’re Mine” and Main Source’s “Fakin’ the Funk.”

The only track from that EP to see a standalone single release was the Main Source cut, issued in remixed form by Wild Pitch Records later that year. Unsurprisingly, it towered above the rest.

Opening with the unmistakable vocal harmonies from Main Ingredient’s “Magic Shoes,” the track flows into a tight drum break lifted from Grady Tate’s much-sampled 1969 classic “Be Black Baby.” Add a splash of Kool & The Gang, and you’ve got a joint that could sit comfortably on Breaking Atoms—Main Source’s masterpiece.

But instead of being part of that legendary album, “Fakin’ the Funk” became the group’s swan song—the final collaboration between K-Cut, Sir Scratch, and Large Professor before his departure. Fittingly, Large Pro delivers one of his sharpest vocal performances, going in on sell-outs alongside longtime ally Neek the Exotic.

This marks the track’s first official release on 7”. A timeless classic, the remix version remains the definitive take.
