Luke Una - Mr Bongo Edits Volume 2 (MRB12061)

É Soul Culturaの中心人物であり、マンチェスターの伝説的パーティー「Electric Chair」の創設者、そして“民衆のチャンピオン”として知られるLuke Unaが、Mr Bongo Editsシリーズ第2弾に登場。彼自身の長年の音楽探求を凝縮し、ダンスフロアを陶酔へと導く秘蔵音源2曲を、自らの手でリエディット＆再構築した珠玉の一枚。

約40年にわたってアンダーグラウンドシーンを牽引してきたLukeは、“夜をさまよう孤高の魂たち”の象徴的リーダーとして、多くの人々の心を動かす選曲センスで知られる。ここ数年では、Mr Bongoよりリリースされたコンピレーション『É Soul Cultura』シリーズを通じて、その審美眼が改めて高く評価されている。

ジャンルも年代も越境する彼のセレクション眼が光る今回のリエディットについて、本人は次のように語っている。「アフロビート、ハウス、テクノ、アンダーグラウンドなブラック・ディスコ——Electric Chairの地下ソウル時代以前からこうした音を掘ってきた。今回の2曲も、世界中の埃だらけのレコード箱から発見した、まさに“聖杯”級の逸品。」

A面には、Thandi Zulu & The Young Fiveによる、Pure Energyの1980年代初期ディスコ・クラシック「Love Game」の南アフリカ版カバーを収録。特徴的なシンセベースとキーボードが炸裂し、Luke曰く「マシン・ソウルの重さとディスコの宗教的高揚感が混ざり合う、狂気の錬金術的サウンド」とのこと。

B面は、南アフリカのジャズピアニストLionel Pillayによる18分に及ぶダンス・ジャム「Plum」のリエディット。「シカゴ・ハウス黎明期のピアノ・トラックを思わせる」とLukeは語り、70年代南ア発とは思えないアグレッシブな展開が特徴。

これらのエディットでは、オリジナルのエッセンスを活かしながらもドラムループの強化とサイケデリックなディスコ的高揚感を付加。シカゴ・ハウスの“ジャッキン・グルーヴ”と宇宙的なトランス感覚が融合し、フロアでの爆発的リアクションを生み出してきた。

Known for his deep, genre-crossing taste and nearly four decades on the underground frontlines, Luke shares two re-edits crafted from his personal arsenal—secret weapons made for maximum dancefloor elevation.

Long hailed as a selector for the late-night devoted, Luke’s two É Soul Cultura compilations cemented his status as one of the most trusted ears in the business. This release continues in that spirit, delivering two tracks plucked from decades of global crate digging and reworked with loving precision.

First up is Thandi Zulu & The Young Five’s South African version of Pure Energy’s early ’80s disco anthem “Love Game.” Driven by a thick synth bassline and wild keys, Luke describes it as “a bonkers alchemy of machine soul, uptempo rawness, and disco evangelism”—a natural candidate for an ecstatic re-edit.

On the flip, Lionel Pillay’s “Plum”—originally a relentless 18-minute jazz-fusion jam from late-’70s South Africa—is transformed. “It reminded me of a 1986 Chicago piano house record,” Luke explains. His rework brings that house feel to the fore, without losing the raw magic of the original.

Luke’s edits strip down and rebuild both tracks, amplifying their groove with looped drums, cosmic textures, and a sense of psychedelic transcendence. “They’ve always had explosive reactions on so many dancefloors—including heavier electronic clubs—so it felt only right to share them more widely.”

Timeless, floor-tested, and lovingly reconstructed—this is underground dance culture at its finest.
