ミスター・ボンゴの〈Groove Merchant〉再発シリーズより、ファンク／ソウル／ブルースの名盤が再登場。ジュニア・パーカーによる本作は、1970年にCapitol Recordsから『The Outside Man』として別ジャケットでリリースされた作品を、1971年の〈Groove Merchant〉版『Love Ain’t Nothin’ But A Business Goin’ On』として復刻したもの。特徴的な車のカバーアートも忠実に再現されている。

ミシシッピ生まれメンフィス育ちのブルース・シンガー／ハーモニカ奏者／ソングライター、ジュニア・パーカー（別名Little Junior Parker）は、1950年代からDukeやMercury、United Artistsなどのレーベルで活動を続け、シーンに確かな足跡を残した。しかし1971年、39歳という若さで手術中にこの世を去っている。

本作は、彼の死の前年に別タイトルで発表されたアルバムであり、ホレス・オットによる洗練されたアレンジのもと、彼特有の滑らかなヴォーカルとソウルフルなグルーヴがたっぷり詰め込まれている。スモーキーなブルースから生々しいファンク、オーケストラ調のソウル・バラードまで、ジャンルを越境する内容だ。

注目すべきは、ビートルズのカバーを3曲収録している点。『Taxman』はニューオーリンズ・ファンク風に大胆に再解釈され、Cypress Hillの名曲「I Wanna Get High」でもサンプリングされた一節が使用されている。『Tomorrow Never Knows』はサイケデリック・ソウル〜スワンプ・ブルース調にアレンジされ、『Lady Madonna』はファンキーなブルースへと変貌を遂げている。

Cypress Hillをはじめ、A Tribe Called QuestやDJ Shadow、De La Soulなど、数多くのアーティストがこのアルバムからサンプリングを行っており、ジュニア・パーカーの音楽は世代を超えて愛され続けている。

ブルース・ホール・オブ・フェイムにも名を連ねる伝説的アーティストの隠れた名作。ファンク／ソウルがクロスオーバーしていった1970年代初頭の空気をそのままパッケージした、極上の一枚。

Originally released in 1970 on Capitol Records under the title The Outside Man with a different cover, this edition faithfully reproduces the 1971 Groove Merchant version titled Love Ain’t Nothin’ But A Business Goin’ On, complete with the iconic car artwork.

Mississippi-born and Memphis-based, Junior Parker—also known as Little Junior Parker—was a revered blues singer, harmonica player, and songwriter with a recording history stretching back to the early 1950s, including releases on Duke, Mercury, and United Artists. Sadly, he passed away at just 39 years old during surgery in 1971.

This album, released just a year before his untimely death, showcases Parker’s smooth-as-butter vocals and deep, soulful grooves. The arrangements, handled by Horace Ott, glide effortlessly from smoky blues to gritty funk and lush soul ballads.

The LP includes three Beatles covers: “Taxman,” “Lady Madonna,” and “Tomorrow Never Knows.” Parker transforms “Taxman” into a swaggering New Orleans funk number—its hook famously sampled by Cypress Hill on “I Wanna Get High.” Elsewhere, “Tomorrow Never Knows” becomes a trippy, swampy soul-blues piece, and “Lady Madonna” is reworked into funky blues form.

As shown by artists like Cypress Hill, A Tribe Called Quest, DJ Shadow, and De La Soul, Parker’s music has become a rich source of samples for generations of producers and musicians. Love Ain’t Nothin’ But A Business Goin’ On is a masterclass in early ’70s crossover soul and funk—an underrated but essential listen from a Blues Hall of Fame icon.
