ブラジル45シリーズの第83弾は、まさに逸品。今回は、ロベルト・デ・メロ・サントスによる2曲を収録している。1949年、ブラジル・レシフェ生まれの彼は、ディ・メロ（Di Melo）の名で知られ、そのディスコグラフィーは多くないものの、ブラジリアン・ソウルの象徴的存在とされている。

彼の名を冠した1975年のデビュー・アルバムは、ブラジリアン・ファンクの金字塔。ブラジル音楽ファン、B-BOY系ブレイクビーツ好き、ファンク・コレクター、サンプル・ディガーに至るまで魅了してやまない。そのオリジナル盤が高額で取引される中、これらの楽曲を改めて世に届けたいという想いから、本作が誕生した。

収録されているのは、アルバムの中でも特に人気の高い “Kilariô” と “Pernalonga” の2曲。奇しくもこの2曲は、1975年にブラジルのOdeonレーベルからプロモーション用コンパクト盤（33回転の7インチ）としてリリースされていた。“Kilariô” は、リラックスしたヴォーカルと極上のアンサンブルが融合した、まさにブラジリアン・ソウルの名曲。“Pernalonga” は、キャッチーなギターとホーンのイントロ、ゆるやかなブレイクビートのドラムが印象的で、2009年のN.A.S.A.による “The People Tree”（デヴィッド・バーンとチャリ・トゥナ参加）の元ネタとしても知られている。

現在も活動を続けるディ・メロは、2019年にフランスのFavorite RecordingsからCotoneteとのコラボ作品をリリース。まさに真のドンと言える存在である。

For the 83rd release in the Brazil 45 series, this one’s a real gem—featuring two tracks by Roberto De Melo Santos. Born in Recife, Brazil in 1949, he is better known as Di Melo, and while his discography may be limited, he stands tall as a true icon of Brazilian soul music.

His self-titled debut album from 1975 is a cult classic of Brazilian funk, beloved by fans of Brazilian grooves, B-boy breaks, funk collectors, and sample diggers alike. With original pressings fetching sky-high prices, this release offers a welcome chance to bring two of its standout tracks back into the spotlight.

The two selections here—“Kilariô” and “Pernalonga”—are among the highlights of that album. Coincidentally, they were also released together in 1975 as a rare compact promo 7” (playing at 33rpm) on Brazil’s Odeon label. “Kilariô” is a Brazilian soul masterpiece, where all the right elements come together, topped by Di Melo’s effortlessly cool vocals. “Pernalonga” opens with an infectious guitar and horn riff, a loose breakbeat groove, and a feel-good energy some might recognize as the sample used in N.A.S.A.’s 2009 track “The People Tree” featuring David Byrne and Chali 2na.

Di Melo remains active to this day, having released a collaborative album with Cotonete in 2019 on Favorite Recordings. A true don of Brazilian music.
