日本ジャズ界の重鎮ドラマー、石川晶が率いるCount Buffaloesによって1972年に録音された異色作『Uganda (Dawn of African Rock)』。Toshiba Recordsからリリースされた本作は、まさに一筋縄ではいかない“異世界トリップ”。プログレッシブ・ロックやサイケ・ロックにアフリカン・パーカッション、ブルース・ファンク、そしてジャズの要素が融合・変容しながら展開する、アブストラクトでディープな音世界が広がる。

2019年にMr Bongoから再発されたファンキー＆アフロビートな名盤『Back To Rhythm』とは対照的に、本作はよりダークで内省的、実験的なトーンを持ち、サイケ・リスナーの深層意識へと引きずり込むような没入感が特徴。無駄な装飾は一切なく、すべてが“音の衝撃”として体感される強烈な一枚。

本作で共演しているのは、ベースの千原秀明、ギターの水谷公生（時に70年代初期のピーター・グリーンを彷彿とさせるトーン）、パーカッションのラリー・砂賀、そして作曲家・編曲家の村岡建といった精鋭たち。バンドのアンサンブルは、緻密でありながら奔放さも兼ね備えており、聴く者の感覚を刺激する。

本作は、サイケデリック、プログレッシブ、アシッド・ロックのレコード・コレクターの間で高く評価されており、オリジナル盤はその希少性から非常に高値で取引されている。

Originally released in 1972 on Toshiba Records, Uganda (Dawn of African Rock) is a mind-expanding journey from legendary Japanese jazz drummer Akira Ishikawa and his band, the Count Buffaloes. Far from playing it safe, Ishikawa dives headfirst into a swirling fusion of genres—progressive and psychedelic rock, African percussion, dergy wah-wah funk, and jazz sensibilities coalesce into a deep and hypnotic sonic experience.

In stark contrast to the upbeat afro-funk of his cult-favourite Back To Rhythm (reissued by Mr Bongo in 2019), Uganda ventures into darker, more abstract terrain. It’s experimental, immersive, and uncompromising—drawing the listener into a heady vortex of sound where every track feels like a ritual.

Joining Ishikawa are bassist Hideaki Chihara, guitarist Kimio Mizutani (whose tone recalls early ’70s Peter Green), percussionist Larry Sunaga, and renowned composer/arranger Takeru Muraoka. Together, they craft a record that is raw, untamed, and utterly hypnotic.

Uganda has become a highly sought-after artifact among collectors of psych, prog, and acid rock. Original pressings are rare and command serious prices on the secondhand market.
