SOYUZ (СОЮ3) - II (MRBLP300)

2022年の名作『Force Of The Wind』で多くのリスナーの心を掴んだベラルーシ発のバンドSOYUZ（СОЮЗ）。その先駆けとも言えるセカンド・アルバム『II』が、今回ついに初のフィジカルリリースとして登場。もともとは2019年にデジタルのみで発表されていた本作は、バンドが進化を遂げる重要な過渡期を記録した貴重な作品であり、『Force Of The Wind』で確立されたスタイルの原型とも言えるサウンドが散りばめられている。

このアルバムが制作された当時、バンドの中心人物アレックス・チュマックはミンスクからキエフへと拠点を移していた。新しい挑戦とホームシックが交錯する中、週末ごとにミンスクへ戻り、バンドメンバーのMikita Arlou、Stanislav MurashkoとともにStudio 42で録音を重ねた。その感情の揺らぎや移ろいが、本作全体に織り込まれている。

MPB（ブラジル音楽）、エチオ・ジャズ、イタリアのライブラリーミュージック（Piero PiccioniやPiero Umiliani）など、グローバルな音楽的養分が作品に華やぎを与えている。「Verocai」はブラジルの巨匠アーサー・ヴェロカイへのオマージュ、「Mirouze」はフランスの作曲家Jean-Pierre Mirouzeに捧げられたトラックでありながら、Milton NascimentoやLô Borgesの影響も感じさせる。アルバム最後を飾る「Nascimento」もまた、ブラジル音楽への深い敬意を感じさせる美しい締めくくりだ。

『Lyric』や『Motive I』では、シネマティックでソウルフルなジャズ・アプローチがのちのスタイルを予見させる。後者はストリングスが優雅に舞うジャズ・インストで、StuderのテープレコーダーとRhodesの柔らかな響きが、アナログな温かさを添えている。

さらに『Business Partners』ではクラウトロックやニューウェーブ的要素を取り入れ、ゲストにInturistを迎えた異色のプロダクションが光る。またアナトリア風の短いインタールード『Corrida』、サイケ・ソウル・ファンクを感じさせる『Tezeta』や『ES-2 Jazz』など、バンドの幅広い音楽性を証明するトラックも並ぶ。『Tezeta』ではセルビアのラッパーPetar Marticのヴァースもフィーチャーされている。

今回のリリースにあたり、アルバム全体はRyan Powerによって新たにミックスされ、Jokerがリマスターを担当。バンド初期の重要作にふさわしい音質で再誕したこの一枚は、SOYUZの現在地を理解するうえでも見逃せない必聴盤。

SOYUZ (СОЮЗ) captured hearts in 2022 with Force Of The Wind, their acclaimed album that introduced many to their rich, genre-blending sound. Now, Mr Bongo proudly presents II—the band’s 2019 sophomore album, previously only available digitally—finally released in physical form. This pivotal recording reveals the early traces of the sound that would define Force Of The Wind, while still bearing the influence of vintage avant-psych-pop from years past.

II was recorded during a transitional period in the life of bandleader Alex Chumak, who had recently relocated from Minsk to Kyiv. Grappling with homesickness while seeking new inspiration, Alex returned to Minsk most weekends to record at Studio 42 with fellow band members Mikita Arlou and Stanislav Murashko. The result is an album that captures the fluidity of movement, memory, and emotion—filtered through a global palette of influences, from MPB and Ethio-jazz to the cinematic sounds of Piero Piccioni and Piero Umiliani.

The opening track, “Verocai,” is a loving nod to Brazilian legend Arthur Verocai, while “Mirouze”—named after the French composer Jean-Pierre Mirouze—offers a clear homage to Milton Nascimento and Lô Borges. These are ghostly connections to music made decades and continents away, yet deeply woven into SOYUZ’s DNA. The album closes with “Nascimento,” a graceful tribute to the iconic Brazilian musician and vocalist.

The beginnings of the band’s now-signature soulful, cinematic jazz are evident in tracks like “Lyric” and “Motive I”—the latter a lush jazz instrumental with soaring strings and warm, analogue textures captured via Studer tape and Rhodes keys.

SOYUZ’s expansive vision is on display throughout: “Business Partners” taps into kosmische, krautrock and new wave, with a guest appearance from Inturist. The Anatolian-tinged interlude “Corrida” and the soulful psych-funk tracks “Tezeta” and “ES-2 Jazz” further showcase their stylistic range. “Tezeta” even features a verse from Serbian rapper Petar Martic.

For this new release, the album was entirely remixed from the ground up by Ryan Power and remastered by Joker, finally doing justice to this vital chapter in SOYUZ’s creative journey.
